We become compassionate not from altruism which denies the self for the sake of the other, but from the insight that sees and feels one is the other.

Two monks were returning to the monastery. It had rained, and there were puddles of water on the road sides. At one intersection a beautiful, young woman was standing. She was unable to walk across because of a puddle of water. The elder of the two monks went up to her and lifted her in his arms. He left her on the other side and continued to the monastery.

In the evening the younger monk asked the elder monk, "Brother, as monks, we are forbidden to touch a woman?"

The elder monk answered, "Yes, Brother."

The younger monk inquired, "Then, how is that you lifted that woman on the road?"

The elder monk smiled and told him, "I left her on the other side of that puddle of water, but you are still carrying her."

What is the difference between a life based on living always to do the right thing, as determined by a social understanding of morality, and living a life based on spontaneous love and compassion?
